NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The No. 9 Vanderbilt women’s tennis team capped National Team Indoors earning their third sweep of the season in a 4-0 victory over the 10th-ranked Duke Blue Devils.
Reeling off a three-match losing streak, the ‘Dores were determined to get off to a fast start against their second Top 10 opponent of the season. Vanderbilt now boasts a 4-3 record, following the doubles point advantage and wins on courts one, two and six.
The Commodores nabbed the doubles point with commanding victories on courts two and three. The freshman duo of Emma Kurtz and Christina Rosca downed Chalena Scholl and Alyssa Smith 6-3. Teaming up together on court three, the duo of Sydney Campbell and Fernanda Contreras only allowed Samantha Harris and Rebecca Smaller two games in their 6-2 victory for the clinch.
Maintaining her momentum into singles play, No. 8 Campbell was first off the court for the black and gold. Playing back at No. 1 singles for the first time this season, the senior gave VU the 2-0 advantage with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Harris.
Vandy’s fourth-ranked Astra Sharma escaped her first set unscathed, not allowing her opponent, No. 21 Meible Chi, a single game. The Blue Devil powered back into play in the second set, nearly forcing a third set, before Sharma took the second set and the competition, 6-0, 7-5.
Emily Smith earned her first dual match victory and first clinch for Vanderbilt against Duke’s Smaller. The Birmingham, England native defeated the Blue Devil and fellow countryman on straight sets, 6-3, 7-5.
The Commodores remain on the road next weekend, concluding nonconference play on a west coast tour. The team takes on Saint Mary’s on Feb. 25 and Stanford on Feb. 26.
