Dores Dominate June Stewart Fall Invitational 10/27/2003 Nashville, Tenn. — The Vanderbilt women’s tennis team completed play at the fourth-annual June Stewart Fall Invtitational Tournament Sunday, Oct. 26, with an overall record of 33-4 during three days of action. Seniors Aleke Tsoubanos and Kelly Schmandt and junior Annie Menees all posted undefeated singles records, while the Commodores did not lose a doubles match. The tournament was broken into four singles and three doubles draw, with a modified round-robin format which allowed most of the 29 players to take part in four singles and three doubles matches during the weekend. In the Clyde McCampbell draw, Schmandt and Menees both posted 4-0 records without losing a set. Menees’ biggest win came against No. 98 Kelly Anderson of Georgia Tech on Saturday (6-4,7-63). In the Meike Babel draw, Tsoubanos also went 4-0. Tsoubanos dropped the first set against Lindsey Stauss of Georgia Tech Saturday before coming back to win the third set 6-0. She fought back from 5-2 down in the second set of her match against Florencia Basile of Ole Miss to win (6-4,7-5). Freshman Amanda Fish’s only loss of the weekend came against her teammate, sophomore Ashley Schellhas (6-2,7-64). Schellhas also posted a 3-1 record in singles action. Fish and Schellhas also paired up to win a pair of doubles matches. Freshman Helene Stephens finished at 3-1, with sophomore newcomer Claire Westerman going 2-1. Stephens was 2-0 in doubles, winning once with Westerman and another time with Cindy Sureephong of Arizona State. In doubles action, the pairings of Tsoubanos/Schmandt and Falk/Menees each defeated a trio of teams from Ole Miss, Georgia Tech and Arizona State. Falk and Menees, the champions of the Furman Fall Invitiatonal, improved their doubles record to 10-1 this fall. Tsoubanos and Schmandt will head next to the National Indoors, Nov. 6-9 in Ann Arbor, Mich., to defend the championship they won earlier this month at the ITA All-American. For the rest of the Commodores, the final stop of the fall season is the Southeastern Conference Coaches’ Tournament in Ga., Nov. 6-9.
