CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The Vanderbilt women’s tennis team capped play in the Miami Spring Invitational Sunday afternoon with four Commodores going undefeated on the weekend in singles play.
The highlight of Sunday’s singles action was No. 19 Sydney Campbell’s victory over Miami’s ninth-ranked Sinead Lohan in a three-set thriller. After falling in the first set 6-1, the senior Commodore powered back into her match to earn the Top-10 win, 1-6, 6-1, 7-6(3).
Campbell, freshman No. 28 Christina Rosca, sophomore Fernanda Contreras remained perfect on the weekend as Rosca defeated the Hurricanes’ Silvia Fuentes in straight sets, 6-3, 7-6(3) and Contreras earned a win over Dominika Paterova, 7-6(4), 6-1. Freshman Emma Kurtz also picked up a win, downing Clara Tanielian, 6-3, 6-1. Astra Sharma picked up a victory on Friday, but did not compete in singles action on Saturday or Sunday.
In tandems, VU picked up two wins while Kurtz and Rosca suffered their first loss of the tournament. The freshmen duo fell 6-1 to Texas Tech’s 14th-ranked team in the nation Sarah Dvorak/Sabrina Federici. Emily Smith and Contreras pulled off a 6-4 victory over Felicity Maltby/Gabriela Talaba. Veteran Commodores Campbell and Georgia Sellyn rounded out their tournament in Miami with a dominant 6-2 win over the Red Raider’s Alba Cortina-Pou/Alex Valenstein.
Vandy fans will have their first glimpse of the 2017 team this upcoming weekend as the ‘Dores host Clemson, Kansas and Virginia Tech in the ITA Kickoff Weekend on Friday and Saturday.
