Athens, Ga. – No. 2 Vanderbilt split a doubleheader with Georgia at Foley Field Saturday afternoon with the Bulldogs winning the opener 3-1 and the Commodores claiming the second game 15-4 to earn the split.
In the second game, the Commodores (34-6, 15-2) used the long ball early and often to jump out to a big lead and roll to a 15-4 win. Zander Wiel, in his first career start, had a career day starting with his first at-bat in the first inning. The redshirt freshman came up with two runners aboard and blasted his first career home run with a three-run shot to left-center field for a three-run VU lead. Wiel’s long ball was not the last of the inning as Spencer Navin and Vinc Conde belted back-to-back solo homers in the frame to give the Dores three round trippers in a five-run first. The three home runs in the inning mark the first time the Commodores have hit multiple home runs in an inning this season.
Vanderbilt continued to flex its offensive muscles with Wiel adding a solo home run in the fifth for his first career multi home run game, and Mike Yastrzemski joined in on the fun with a two-run shot in the seventh. The Dores finished off the Bulldogs (15-25, 4-13) with a five-run ninth and four more hits to match the team’s season-best of 19 hits. Vanderbilt’s five home run game is the most since the Commodores smashed four homers against Florida State in a Super Regional game in 2010.
Wiel ended the day a perfect 3-for-3 with four runs scored and a team season-best five RBI. Yastrzemski and Harrell each added three hits as 10 Commodores contributed at least one hit in the win. Kyle Farmer led the Bulldogs with two home runs of his own for a total of four RBI.
Tyler Beede (10-0) was the beneficiary of the offensive outburst, earning his 10th straight win. The right-hander allowed four runs on seven hits with seven strikeouts over seven innings. Beede cruised through the first five innings allowing only three base runners but ran into trouble in the sixth in the form of Farmer, who hit both of his home runs off Beede. With his 10th win, Beede becomes the ninth pitcher in Vanderbilt history to win at least 10 games in a single season. Georgia starter Patrick Boling (2-5) took the loss for the Dawgs giving up seven runs on 11 hits, including four home runs, over 4.1 innings. The Georgia bullpen was roughed up for eight runs over the final 4.2 innings.
The Commodores’ offensive outpouring in the second game came on the heels of a frustrating offensive performance in a 3-1 loss in the opener. Vandy loaded the bases in the first inning but could not score and left the bases loaded again in the third. While the Dores were struggling to take advantage of their opportunities the Bulldogs were not wasting their opportunities. Georgia took the lead in the first and added a run in the third with both runs that scored reaching base via a Kevin Ziomek walk.
VU finally scratched out a run in the fourth, scoring a run on Xavier Turner’s infield single. The Commodores looked to be in business in the seventh with runners on the corners and no outs but Yastrzemski popped up to shortstop and Vince Conde hit into an inning ending double play to end the threat.
Ziomek (7-2) took the loss despite turning in his third complete game of the season. The lefty allowed three runs, two earned, on four hits across eight innings. Blake Dieterich (2-2) picked up the win in relief with 2.1 scoreless innings. Jarrett Brown tossed a 1-2-3 ninth inning to notch his first save of the season.
The Dores and Dawgs will decide the series tomorrow at 1 p.m. CT with T.J. Pecoraro (1-1) getting the ball for Vandy against Georgia’s right-hander Sean McLaughlin (4-3).
