PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. – Vanderbilt student-athletes flew through their first day qualifying matches at the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships, giving up just four games throughout first-round matches. Overall, all three victories on the day came over ranked opponents.

No. 63 Fernanda Contreras downed her opening round opponent, Rice’s No. 45 Lindsay Hodge. The Commodore out of Austin, Texas earned the upset victory, defeating the Owl in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2.

In her second round of play, Contreras faced a familiar foe in Stanford’s No. 51 Caroline Lampl. While the Cardinal walked away with the first set, Contreras raced back into the competition to secure her place in tomorrow’s third round of qualifiers in three sets, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2. The junior will face a SEC foe in Kentucky’s No. 53 Akvile Parazinskaite.

Unranked sophomores, Christina Rosca and Emma Kurtz, dominated their first-round competition as the pairing limited third-seeded No. 22 Maria Kononova and Tamuna Kutubidze out of North Texas to one single game. The Commodores were close to facing fellow Nashvillians, Dzyuba and Buberl of Lipscomb in tomorrow’s action, however Southern Cal’s No. 46 Angela Kulikov and Madison Westby earned the win, 8-5.
