Dores cruise by Crimson Tide

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The fourth-ranked Vanderbilt women’s tennis squad handed the No. 37 Alabama Crimson Tide a 4-0 loss in the Commodores’ second Southeastern Conference match of the season.

With the victory, the Commodores improve to 9-2 overall, 6-0 at home and 2-0 in SEC play.

The black and gold opened Sunday’s matinee clinching the doubles point with wins on courts one and two, respectively.

No. 23 Astra Sharma and Fernanda Contreras earned the first win of the day, getting off the court with a 6-2 victory over the Tide’s Luca Fabian and Andie Daniell. Emma Kurtz and Emily Smith clinched the 1-0 advantage for the Dores, taking court two in a 6-3 victory over Alba Cortina-Pou and Ann Selim. Amanda Meyer and Christina Rosca led 5-4 on court three at the conclusion of doubles action.

The Commodores carried that momentum into singles, taking first set advantages on all six courts.

After taking her first loss of the year on Friday night, Meyer rebounded against Alabama, breezing through her second SEC competition. The freshman dominated Ann Selim on court four with a flawless 6-0, 6-0 victory for her first SEC win as a Commodore.

Smith only allowed her opponent, Kimberly Gintrand, one game in each set on court six for a 3-0 Vanderbilt lead. The Commodore walked away with her first dual match win of her junior campaign, 6-1, 6-1.

Fifth-ranked Contreras clinched the victory for Vandy on court two. The Austin, Texas native downed Smith Hinton 6-2, 6-2 for her seventh win of the dual match season. In all, Vanderbilt limited Alabama to just six games throughout all three finished singles matches on courts four, six and two.
