GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Vanderbilt women’s tennis team picked up nine wins in the first day of the Furman Fall Classic in Greenville, S.C.
The eight-team tournament featured six singles flights and three doubles flights. In singles action, the Commodores picked up five wins on the day. In Flight 2, Chelsea Preeg defeated South Carolina’s Dijana Stojic, 6-2, 2-6, 6-3, and will face Rosalina Alda of Tennessee in the semifinal match Saturday morning. Alex Leatu defeated UT’s Millie Nichols, 6-2, 7-6 (7-2) in the opening round of Flight 3.
In Flight 4, Lauren Mira cruised to a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Federica Suess of Florida State in the opening round. She will face Clemson’s Klara Vyskocilova Saturday morning. Nelly Radeva defated Northwestern’s Elena Chernyakova, 6-3, 6-1, in the opening match of Flight 5. In Flight 6, Erica Robertson handed Northwestern’s Natalie Edell, 6-1, 6-2. She will face North Carolina’s Jennifer Stone in the second round on Saturday morning.
Vanderbilt also found success in doubles play, tallying four wins on the day. The duo of Rachael Dillon and Leatu advanced to the championship match of Flight 1 after defeating Margaret Boyette and Amanda Murray of Furman, 9-8(3) in the first round and Clemson’s Josipa Bek and Keri Wong, 8-6, in the second round. Also in Flight 1 were Preeg and Lauren Mira, who dropped their first match, but won the consolation match, 8-3, and will play for fifth place on Sunday morning. Jackie Wu and Erica Robertson will also play for fifth place in Flight 2 on Sunday.
Due to forcasted rain in the Greenville area on Sunday, the final two singles rounds will be played on Saturday and the remaining doubles matches will be moved to indoor courts if necessary.
