NASHVILLE, Tenn. — No. 19 Vanderbilt women’s tennis matches up against Mississippi State for its SEC home opener on Friday at the Lummis Tennis Center.
The Dores come into tomorrow riding a seven-match win streak after dismantling Missouri 7-0 on Sunday. Vanderbilt is off to its best start since 2020-2021, in which the black and gold opened the spring season 8-0. Four singles players and three doubles pairs are on active multi-match win streaks, and the collective unit possesses six ranked singles wins and three ranked doubles victories.
Sophomore Valeria Ray’s twelve consecutive singles victories mark the longest active stretch within the conference. She now owns the only double-digit singles win streak in the SEC and is the only underclassman in the conference with 22 singles wins or more. Ray currently leads the team in both singles and doubles victories.
Mississippi State dropped a 4-0 decision to then-No. 21 Alabama on Sunday in their conference opener, which was also its first dual match against a Power Four opponent. History is not on the side of the Bulldogs, who have an 8-41 all-time record against the Commodores. Their last victory in the series came in 2018, where Mississippi State generated a 4-3 upset over No. 2 Vanderbilt.
Tomorrow’s match marks the beginning of alumni weekend for the Commodores; events will take place throughout the weekend, concluding with Sunday’s match against No. 17 Alabama. This includes a return of the 2015 national championship team, who will receive in-game recognition at the Vanderbilt men’s basketball game against Missouri on Saturday.
