Now that the Commodores are back in the Land of the Free and Home of the Brave (and good reliable internet), take a look at what the team experienced in the Dominican Republic last week.
This is the third and final installment of the team’s photos from the trip. Check out the full photo gallery along with the photos and stories below.
The Commodores started their Thanksgiving with a late breakfast and BP at a field behind the team’s hotel. These local players were taking ground balls and hitting in the cage before the Dores took the field. A player was signed off this field that morning by Arizona just to prove there is talent everywhere in the Dominican.
This field was a lot like the field the Commodores played on in the team’s first game of the trip on Sunday. This field, however, had houses ringing three sides with a street running down the first base side. The houses behind the plate and third base were less 10 feet from the field. This is also where the Dores encountered their fourth animal of the trip on the field at the same time. A local dog felt at home in the outfield until we tried to take a picture of him, then he found a hole in the wall and was gone.
New of the Commodores’ College World Series victory made it to the DR.
On the way into the city to take on the Escogido reserve team, the streets were flooded and water was everywhere… including the infield at Estadio Quisqueya. The stadium did have a tarp but it was not on the field during the storm. But just like Sunday, the sponges came out and after a couple of hours of work and sun the field was ready to go.
With the game delayed a couple of hours, the lights were needed to finish the game. The Dores topped the Lions in this one with Dansby Swanson and Rhett Wiseman each hitting home runs. The Escogido ‘reserves’ featured a couple of players with big league time and former first round pick of the San Diego Padres Cory Spangenberg.
After a late Thanksgiving dinner and a quick turnaround, the Dores were back at the Estadio for the final game on the final day of the trip. Licey brought out the big guns for the game with the Tigers pitching holding down the Commodores in a 3-0 Licey win.
With the trip over the team ate at the ballpark, said their good byes and headed for the Santo Domingo airport and America.
