Defending Champs Come to Town

No. 2 Texas A&M visits No. 16 Vanderbilt on Sunday

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — No. 16 Vanderbilt women’s tennis hosts defending champion No. 2 Texas A&M tomorrow in the highest-ranked matchup between the two programs since 2017.

For the first time all season, the Dores dropped back-to-back matches after suffering a 4-3 defeat to No. 13 Texas on Saturday. However, Vanderbilt still has plenty of momentum leading into Sunday’s match. No. 119-ranked sophomore Valeria Ray brings her 16-match win streak to the table, just four away from tying the program record for consecutive singles victories. The stretch is the longest active in the SEC. No. 44-ranked senior Célia-Belle Mohr enters tomorrow’s contest on a nine-win singles streak of her own to go along with a team-high six ranked singles victories. In doubles, Mohr along with freshman Sophia Webster are winners of eight straight and currently make up the nation’s No. 9 duo. The all-time series between the Dores and Aggies is even at 12-12; Vandy fell 7-0 in last season’s matchup.

Texas A&M captured the program’s first national title after defeating Georgia 4-1 last season. The Aggies roll into Nashville having won seven consecutive matches and are unbeaten in conference play. Their only loss came in a revenge defeat from Georgia on Feb. 11 at the ITA Indoor Championships. Texas A&M has five ranked players in singles, all of which are inside the top-75. Mary Stoiana leads the way at No. 4; she was named ITA National Player of the Year last season and is the reigning back-to-back SEC Player of the Year. The Aggies possess three ranked doubles pairs. Stoiana and Lucciana Perez are No. 31 in the most recent ITA rankings with a 3-0 record against nationally ranked opponents.

No. 16 Vanderbilt (11-3, 4-2 SEC) hosts No. 2 Texas A&M (15-1, 6-0 SEC) tomorrow at 1 p.m. Live streaming will be available online, with live stats accessible here at the start of the match.
