After losing a close match 8-6 in the morning session, Vanderbilt’s No. 1 doubles team of junior Amanda Fish (<?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>Scituate, Mass.) and sophomore Taka Bertrand (Great Falls, Va.) came back from down 0-3 in their second match to defeat Richmond’s Beatrice Grasu and Meghan Wolfgram. So far on the weekend, the duo is 2-1 in doubles play.

Fish and Bertrand were not the only Commodores to make a rally. Freshmen Liberte Sveke (Sarasota, Fla.) and Maggie Yahner (Las Vegas, Nev.) were also down 0-3, and then 2-5 in their second match of the day against UR’s Robin Carter and Jessica Hubbard. The newcomers fought hard to get back in the match however, getting it to 6-7 and then? . Sveke and Yahner lost their first match on the day, 8-0, to ArizonaState’s Rebecca Rankin and Sabrina Capannolo.

VU’s other doubles team of sophomore Caroline Ferrell (Blythewood, S.C.) and freshman Courtney Ulery (Wellington, Fla.) won both their matches 8-2 and 8-1. Their first match, an 8-2 victory over Leitch and Laila Abdala of ASU, was ArizonaState’s only doubles loss that the Sundevils had nine doubles matches.

Singles play will begin at 1:30.
