Day One of the June Stewart Invitational

Nashville – The first day of Vanderbilt’s Fall Tournament, the June Stewart Invitational, concluded after nearly 7 hours of play today. In the morning, teams competed in two sessions of the doubles round robin in the Clyde McCamble Scramble Draw.

Commodore teams went 3-0 against Wisconsin teams in the first session and did not play in the second session. Junior Amanda Fish (Scituate, Mass.) and sophomore Taka Bertrand (Great Falls, Va.) defeated Wisconsin’s Kaylan Caiati and Liz Carpenter, 8-1. Sophomore Caroline Ferrell (Blythewood, S.C.) and freshman Courtney Ulery (Wellington, Fla.) won their match 8-4 over Lexi Goldin and Erin Jobe. The other VU doubles pair, freshmen Liberty Sveke (Sarasota, Fla.) and Maggie Yahner (Las Vegas, Nev.) also won 8-4, over Chelsea Nusslock and Morgan Tuttle. Ole Miss and Richmond split their two doubles matches. In the second session, it was Arizona State’s turn to go 3-0, defeating squads Richmond .

Singles play began shortly after 1 p.m. and saw the hosting Commodores win four of their five matches. Bertrand, Ferrell, and Yahner each won in two sets, while Sveke went to the third set before winning. Two Commodores competed in the Marshall Summars Singles Draw, Bertrand, who easily dispatched Richmond’s Pamela Duran 6-0, 6-2, and Ulery who fell 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 to Caiati.

Ferrell, who played in the Alex Kwak Distinguished Alumnus Draw, won her match over Goldin, 6-0, 6-2. In the Tom Boysen Draw, Yahner hung in tough to outlast 7-6 (5), 7-5, while Sveke beat 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.

While Ulery moved to the consolation bracket, the four other Commodore will play semifinal matches tommorrow.
