Day one hits, blanks Lipscomb

Nashville, Tenn. – Chandler Day was outstanding in one hitting Lipscomb on Tuesday night in Vanderbilt’s 10-0 win at First Tennessee Park.

Day worked his way into the ninth inning having allowed no hits and only five Bisons (14-10) to reach base. The right-hander promptly walked leadoff hitter Lee Solomon on five pitches to start the ninth inning. But a pop up to Connor Kaiser at shortstop turned into two outs as Solomon was caught too far off of first base with Kaiser’s accurate throw doubling up Solomon. With one out left to record the Commodores’ (17-9) first no hitter since 2003, Lipscomb third baseman Zeke Dodson ended the bid with a clean single to center field. Day wrapped up his first career shutout and the Dores’ first shutout of the season one batter later with a ground ball to third.

Day retired the first seven batters he faced before hitting Tyler Bethune with one out in the third. A double play erased the hit by pitch and put Day through three innings facing the minimum. He worked around walks in the fourth and sixth before issuing his third walk of the night to start the seventh. A wild pitch moved Cade Sorrells into scoring position but Day responded by striking out the side to finish off seven no-hit innings. He navigated another two-out walk in the eighth before getting Lipscomb leadoff hitter Michael Gigliotti to fly out to center field and send Day to the ninth bidding for history.

While Day was rolling on the mound, his teammates were doing the same at the plate. The Dores took the lead in the third on a Stephen Scott RBI-single and busted the game open in the fourth with three runs. Will Toffey led off with a double and moved to third on Reed Hayes single through the left side. A third straight hit from Jason Delay put another run on the board and Ethan Paul’s single made it 4-0 Vanderbilt and capped the rally. Hayes added a two-run single in the fifth with his second hit of the night and pushed his total to 12 RBIs in his last six games. Jeren Kendall put an exclamation point on the night with a towering three-run homer to right field in the ninth.

The Vanderbilt offense scored 27 runs on 30 hits in the two games at First Tennessee Park against Belmont and Lipscomb and has scored 60 runs over the last six games.

Day improved to 4-0 on the season, walking five and striking out seven.

Lipscomb starter John Pryor took the loss after giving up four runs on five hits over three innings.

The Commodores return to action on Friday night at 5:30 p.m. CT at No. 16 Kentucky on SEC Network+.
