Day 2: June Stewart Invitational

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Vanderbilt women’s tennis team continued tournament action at the Currey Tennis Center in the program’s annual June Stewart Invitational. VU picked up four wins on the day against Auburn, Ole Miss and Wichita State.

The `Dores took to the courts early Saturday morning, facing the Wichita State Shockers in doubles action. Vandy picked up one win out of the three matches played as Ellie Yates and Sydney Campbell swept the Shockers in a decisive 6-0 victory.

Astra Sharma and Fernanda Contreras put up a nice performance for the black and gold, but WSU’s Schiller/Porubin edged the new pair out with a 6-4 win on court one. Senior Maggie Leavell and freshman Summer Dvorak suffered a hard 6-2 loss to Guidetti/Pedrazzi.

Following doubles action, Vandy took on a mix of student-athletes’ from both Auburn and Ole Miss. The `Dores competed well with Yates and Contreras both pulling out wins in three sets. Sharma faced a tough opponent in Auburn’s Mueller, defeating the Tiger in the first set tiebreaker, and coming out victorious 6-4 in the second set.

Vanderbilt begins competing in the last day of tournament action Sunday morning at 11:00 am with doubles action.
