NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The Vanderbilt women’s tennis team generated five wins in both singles and doubles on Friday to kick off the June Stewart Invitational at the Lummis Family Tennis Center.
Sophomores Trinetra Vijayakumar and Sophia Webster got the ball rolling at Vandy’s top two singles positions against Purdue. Vijayakumar cruised to a 6-3, 6-2 win over Sophya Devas. After falling 6-1 in the first set to Kayal Gownder, Webster roared back with a 6-1 second set before claiming the match with a 10-6 tiebreaker win. Senior Sonya Macavei pulled away against Kathryn Wilson, generated a 7-6 (4), 6-4 victory, marking three Commodore wins over the Boilermakers.
No. 12 ranked Webster and graduate Célia-Belle Mohr returned to the court for the first time since claiming the ITA Ohio Valley Regional doubles championship. The pair did not lose a step en route to a 6-1 defeat of Ole Miss’ Andrea Nova and Brooklyn Olson. Macavei and Vijayakumar rounded out the day with yet another win for the black and gold, taking down of Serafima Bobrovnikova and Martina Bovio of Lipscomb.
Saturday will begin with Vanderbilt facing Ole Miss and Lipscomb in singles at 9 a.m. before taking on Kentucky in doubles at not before 11 a.m. Purdue and Kentucky are set for singles matches following doubles play.
