David Price Pitches Three Hitless Innings in USA Baseball Win 7/5/2005 David Price walked one and struck out four in 3.0 relief innings in helping lead the USA Baseball Team to a 3-1 victory over the Torrington Twisters of the New England Collegiate Baseball League. The complete story follows: USA BASEBALL NATIONAL TEAM WINS OPENER AT 3-1 TORRINGTON TORRINGTON, Conn. – A three-run first inning proved to be all the offense necessary as the USA Baseball National Team won its first game of the 2005 tour 3-1 Saturday night against the Torrington Twisters of the New England Collegiate Baseball League. Shane Robinson (Florida State, So., Tampa, Fla.) drew a walk to start the game, stole second and then scored on a single to left-center off the bat of John Jay (Miami-FL, So., Miami, Fla.). Sean Doolittle (Virginia, Fr., Tabernacle, N.J.) later scored Jay with a single up the middle, and Doolittle scored on a double to right-center by Wes Hodges (Georgia Tech, So., Ooltewah, Tenn.). Torrington answered with a run in the bottom of the first and threatened for more. However, starter Kyle McCulloch (Texas, So., Houston, Texas) got out of jams in both the first and second innings. Torrington never again seriously threatened. “It’s always good to win,” Team USA head coach Steve Smith said. “(Torrington) played a heck of a ball game. It was a very interesting game in that every run scored in the first inning. Kyle pitched out of some trouble early and got better as the game went along.” McCulloch allowed one run on six hits and a walk with four strikeouts in 5.0 innings. After allowing hits to five of the first eight batters he faced, McCulloch retired 11 in a row before a Michael Just single down the line in left in the fifth. However, Just was thrown out at second trying to stretch the single into a double. David Price (Vanderbilt, Fr., Murfreesboro, Tenn.) and Chris Perez (Miami-FL, So., Holmes Beach, Fla.) closed out the game for Team USA; neither allowed a hit. Price walked one and struck out four in 3.0 innings. Perez struck out the side in the ninth to record the save. Doolittle and Blake Davis (Cal State Fullerton, So., Fountain Valley, Calif.) both recorded two-hit nights. Team USA returns to action Sunday, traveling to Keene, N.H., for a 7 p.m. contest against the Keene Swamp Bats of the New England Collegiate Baseball League at Alumni Field. NOTE: Prior to the national anthem, a moment of silence was held for USA Baseball alumnus Steve Reich. A member of the 1993 National Team who pitched collegiate ball at the United States Military Academy, Reich was among eight Navy SEALs and eight of the Army’s 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment who were aboard a Chinook helicopter that crashed in the eastern mountains of Afghanistan on Tuesday. Reich, who carried the Star-Spangled Banner for the athletes representing the United States at the opening ceremonies of the 1993 World University Games in Buffalo, N.Y., was a native of Washington, Conn.
