CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The Vanderbilt Commodores wrapped up their final day of tournament action in Miami going undefeated in singles action. Freshman Fernanda Contreras won her tournament flight, and comes back to Nashville as one of the two individual winners of the Miami Fall Invite.
Beating out several challenging foes from Auburn, Miami and Georgia Tech the San Luis Potosi, Mexico native defeated each of her opponents in straight sets and was never taken to a set tiebreaker.
In Sunday’s finale, Contreras battled GT sophomore Alexis Prokopuik and came out with a decisive 6-4, 6-0 victory.
In the Orange bracket, senior No. 49 Frances Altick took home fifth place after beating Miami’s No. 73 Wendy Zhang; 6-2, 6-2. Summer Dvorak earned anther tournament win as she defeated Auburn’s Caroline Turner in consolation play in a close three set battle; 3-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-7)
Success continued for the `Dores in non-tournament play, as Ellie Yates defeated Miami’s Silvia Fuentes 5-7, 6-2, 1-0 (10-7).
Vanderbilt will be back in tournament action this weekend as the squad travels to Greenville, S.C. for the Furman Fall Classic.
