NASHVILLE, Tenn. – With one last day of tournament play on the horizon in Miami, one Commodore looks to play in her first collegiate singles final while three student-athletes return home to Nashville with valuable experience gained from the Oracle/ITA Masters.
Late Saturday night VU’s No. 4 Courtney Colton and Sydney Campbell battled in Malibu in the doubles semifinal, but Southern Cal’s Olmos/Smith took an early lead and held on to complete the upset in straight sets; 6-2, 6-3.
In consolation play of the Oracle/ITA Masters the Commodores went 1-1 in singles play, with Sydney Campbell falling to Cal’s Fabikova 7-6 (6), 6-1. Redshirt sophomore Astra Sharma won her consolation match with a close 6-4, 6-4 victory over Michigan’s No. 19 Ronit Yurovsky. The Aussie finished up tournament play falling to Miami’s Wagner in Consolation semifinals; 6-3, 6-1.
Across the country in Miami, four Commodores continued participation in the annual Miami Fall Invitational, going 4-4 in singles action and 1-1 in doubles play.
In doubles, the senior/freshman duo of Ellie Yates and Summer Dvorak trailed several times against a strong Auburn team, but pulled out the victory for Vanderbilt in their doubles flight finale; 7-5.
Top-seeded Frances Altick and Fernanda Contreras lost their third-place contest letting go an early 5-0 lead. Georgia Tech’s Anton-Ohlmeyer/Kurey put on an impressive performance for the Yellow Jackets as the pair took the win after winning seven straight games.
Commodore veterans Altick and Yates suffered “Orange” quarterfinal losses to Miami’s No. 94 Ogando and Auburn’s top-seeded No. 47 Burgmans, respectively.
In the “Green” bracket Contreras continued making waves for the Dores as her winning streak in Miami endures. The freshmen defeated Miami’s second-seeded Silvia Fuentes 6-1, 6-2 and Clara Tanielian 6-4, 6-4 to reach flight finals.
In consolation action, Dvorak battled back to defeat Pittsburgh’s Callie Frey 0-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-3). The Laguna Beach, Calif. native fell in her consol. semifinal match to Auburn’s Alannah Griffin; 7-5, 6-3.
