WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. –For Fernanda Contreras, the season has come to a close in the semifinal round of the NCAA singles championships. The junior caps her season at the Wake Forest Tennis Center with 44 victories on the year, the most single-season wins of any Vanderbilt women’s tennis player.
Contreras’ season was one for the books as the Austin, Texas native made it to the semifinal round of every individual tournament she competed in throughout the entire year. Contreras earned her first individual title on October eighth, battling all the way through qualifier rounds to take the Commodores’ first Rivera/ITA Singles Tournament title.
The 10th-ranked/eighth-seeded Commodore squared off against Pepperdine’s No. 17 Ashley Lahey in the Final Four. For Fernanda, Sunday’s competition was the NCAA team semifinalists’ ninth day of completion in 11 days.
Giving her all against the powerful Pepperdine Wave, Lahey proved too much for the Commodore in the particular matchup, taking the match and place in NCAA finals, 6-3, 6-3.
Contreras is the second Commodore to ever compete in the NCAA singles semifinals, following Sydney Campbell‘s semifinal finish in 2017. The two-time 2018 All-American will practice and compete in tournaments throughout the summer in preparation for her senior season.
