Contreras advances at Fall Championships

Nov. 1, 2017

PALM DESERT, Calif.  This week, Fernanda Contreras and Christina Rosca of Vanderbilt women’s tennis team kicked off the final event of the collegiate tennis fall season, the inaugural Oracle ITA National Fall Championships.

Contreras was first on court for the black and gold, as the 13th-seeded junior from Austin, Texas took on North Carolina’s Sara Daavettila. The Commodore sprinted through her first set against the 2017 ITA All-American and ACC Freshman of the Year, giving up just one game. Daavettila battled back in the second set to make it 4-all. Up 5-4, Contreras held serve on a deuce point to seal her spot in the Fall Championships round of 32, 6-1, 6-4.

Rosca faced Ohio State’s redshirt freshman Shiori Fukuda in the tournament’s opening round of play. The Buckeye obtained a close first set lead, 6-4, however Rosca began rallying in the second set and looked to force a third-set. With the sophomore Commodore leading 5-2 in the second set, her opponent began a rally of her own to take five straight games and win the match, 6-5, 7-5.

Contreras will take the court tomorrow and face Syracuse’s Miranda Ramirez. Ramirez defeated Tyler Junior College’s Tamara Arnold in straight-sets, 6-4, 6-2.
