Commodores Wrap Up Carmel Cup

Vanderbilt cards a team total of 1089 (371-359-359) for the weekend

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. – The Commodore men’s golf team wrapped up the weekend at the Carmel Cup in their first tournament of the season with a final total of 1089 (371-359-359), which placed the team in eighth place at the Pebble Beach Golf Links. Sophomore Reid Davenport was the top finisher for Vanderbilt, ending the event in a tie for 13th with a final score of 211 (73-69-69).

On Sunday, Vanderbilt counted Davenport’s 3-under 69, a 71 from junior Harrison Ott, a pair of 72’s from freshmen William Moll and Matthew Riedel, and a 75 from sophomore Michael Shears in their final round.

“I thought the most encouraging part of the day was that our young group battled through the finish line,” said Vanderbilt head coach Scott Limbaugh. “Reid played solid these last two days and looked comfortable out there, which is big for our team moving forward. We had some momentum early in the round and we made some immature decisions and they cost us. Everyone was trying a little too hard to make a shot and I think that showed. A lot of that is my fault and I need to do a better job helping our young guys play the game and not press.”

Texas Tech won the team title after carding a 35-under-par 1045 (358-343-344) for the tournament, which included a 16-under 344 on Sunday. The Red Raiders finished six shots ahead of second-place Oklahoma.

Individually, Sandy Scott of Texas Tech won medalist honors with a 14-under 202 (70-67-65), one shot better than Arkansas’ Julian Perico.

“This was a tough learning experience for our team and coaches,” said Limbaugh. “I am committed to helping us own this performance and grow from it and work to be better the next time we get to compete. However, our sole focus right now has to be on us and getting a little better each day. I really do like this team and I love the character of the group. When things are hard it makes you better, so we will learn a lot about us by how we respond.”

Vanderbilt returns to the course Sept. 29-Oct. 1 at the Nike Collegiate Invitational in North Plains, Oregon, at the Pumpkin Ridge Country Club.
