NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Vanderbilt had to use a late three-run rally to come back and beat Brown 6-3 in the second game of a doubleheader Sunday and finish off a series and doubleheader sweep following a 6-5 win in the first game at Hawkins Field.
The Bears took a 3-1 lead into the bottom of the fifth inning in a scheduled seven-inning game before the Vandy offense woke up and tied the game. Anthony Gomez scored on a wild pitch and Conrad Gregor’s pinch-hit single drove in Curt Casali to tie the game. The offense again clicked in the bottom of the sixth scoring three runs on four hits and sending nine men to the plate. Aaron Westlake led off the inning with a double and came around to score on Gomez’s single. Gomez again scored on a wild pitch and Joe Loftus drew a bases loaded walk to cap the rally. Corey Williams pitched around a leadoff single in the final inning to earn his first save of the year.
Westlake led the Dores going 3-for-3 with his second home run of the year and finished the double dip 5-for-8 with three RBI and two runs scored. Mark Lamm earned the win pitching 1.1 innings of relief for Vanderbilt. Lucas Whitehill took the loss for Brown allowing six runs on nine hits over 5.1 innings.
In the first game the Commodores had to hold off a late Brown rally to earn the win. Shoddy defense helped the Bears score four unearned runs late in the game and close the gap to a run before Navery Moore closed out the victory and notched his team-best fourth save.
The Dores took control early scoring four runs in the first four innings and collected a hit in all nine frames. Tony Kemp, Bryan Johns, Westlake, Jason Esposito and Gregor all had two-hit games to lead the Commodores 13-hit attack. Grayson Garvin picked up his second win of the year allowing one run on three hits in five innings of work. Brown starter Kevin Carlow was saddled with the loss allowing five runs, three earned, on eight hits across 5.2 innings.
Vanderbilt continues the home stand on Tuesday against Wofford and Wednesday against Kennesaw State before welcoming Illinois-Chicago to Nashville for a three-game weekend series. First pitch against Wofford and Kennesaw State is scheduled for 4 p.m.
