3/5/2006 The Commodores (10-1, 2-0) notched their second SEC win against Auburn (4-5, 0-2) on Sunday 7-0. The first win of the day came from freshmen tandem Courtney Ulery and Liberty Sveke who shut out Tiger duo Gray and Tippins (8-0) at No. 3 doubles. The Tigers rebounded with a win at No. 1 (8-4), tying up the doubles round, mirroring Friday’s doubles action against Alabama. While VU’s Taka Bertrand and Amanda Fish were unable to clinch the point against the Crimson Tide, the Commodores edged out Auburn (9-7), putting the ‘Dores up 1-0. “Auburn played a great doubles point. We were really fortunate to get it,” Vanderbilt Head Coach Geoff Macdonald said. In singles, Taka Bertrand was the first to fire off a set win against Auburn’s Chappell (6-0) at No. 2. Bertrand followed up with a 6-3 second set win to improve her overall record to 10-0. Maggie Yahner was the first Commodores to notch a match point, defeating Auburn’s Gray 6-2, 6-0. The Commodores followed with straight set wins in all positions, except No. 4 singles. After defeating Auburn’s Almagno in the first set, freshman Courtney Ulery dropped the second set 6-3 at No. 4. Ulery quickly rebounded in the super tiebreaker where she held Almagno to three points. “I was really pleased in able to win another SEC match. We are just going to try and stay focused through our couple of road trips ahead,” Macdonald said. The Commodores will go on a three match road stretch, beginning with No. 3 Georgia Tech on Tuesday, followed by LSU and Arkansas over the weekend. RESULTS Order of finish: 6, 2, 1, 5, 4 |
