Nashville, Tenn. – Vanderbilt rolled over UT Martin on Tuesday night at Hawkins Field in an 11-0 shutout victory.
One week removed from throwing a one-hit shutout, Chandler Day climbed the mound again for the Commodores (19-11) and delivered another spectacular performance. Day dominated the Skyhawks (9-16) after getting a double play to end the first. He issued a one-out walk in the second but responded by retiring the next 11 Skyhawks in order to put him into the sixth inning. During the stretch, the sophomore struck out seven batters to push his total to nine strikeouts. A single snapped the streak to open the sixth but Day quickly recorded the next two outs. With runners on the corners and two down, Day finished off his team-best fifth win in style by recording his career-best 10th strikeout of the night.
With Day rolling on the mound, the Commodores’s offense waited until the sixth inning to blow the game open when Ty Duvall roped a double into the right field corner to score two runs and push the VU lead to five. The Dores piled on from there, adding two runs in the seventh and four more in the eighth on five hits. For the third straight midweek game, the Vandy offense scored at least 10 runs in the win collecting 11 hits along the way. Nine different Commodores contributed hits with Reed Hayes leading the way with three hits and two RBIs. Connor Kaiser extended his hitting streak to seven games with a double in the eighth inning.
Day led a quartet of Vandy pitchers to combine on the team’s second shutout of the season. The right-hander scattered two hits over his six innings to earn the win. Jackson Gillis, Collin Snider and Hayes all followed with one scoreless inning each to finish off the shutout.
UT Martin reliever Jake Patzner took the loss after giving up three runs, two earned, on two hits over 2.2 innings.
Vanderbilt returns to the road this weekend with a trip to No. 12 South Carolina beginning Thursday night at 6 p.m. CT on SEC Network.
