Commodores Set to Open Fall Slate

Women's tennis travels to Cary, N.C. for ITA All-Americans

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Vanderbilt women’s tennis returns to competition for the first time in over three months as the Dores take on the ITA All-American Championships at Cary Tennis Park in Cary, North Carolina.

“The team has worked really hard from the start of our preseason segment through our full 20-hour week training block, and I know they are excited about kicking off the fall season this weekend in Cary,” head coach Aleke Tsoubanos said. “We will be well represented at the All-American Championships with eight players in at least one or both singles and doubles draws.”

Senior Sonya Macavei, sophomores Sophia Webster and Trinetra Vijayakumar and freshman Yamakita represent the Dores in the prequalifying round, starting tomorrow. Qualifying kicks off on Monday and the main draw is set to begin on Wednesday. The finals for both singles and doubles will be held on Sunday, Sept. 28.

Vandy opens the fall season with multiple players in the initial 2025-26 ITA rankings. Graduate Célia-Belle Mohr leads the Dores with a No. 2 singles ranking, senior Bridget Stammel trails just behind at No. 27 and junior Valeria Ray comes in at No. 45. In doubles, Mohr and Webster make up the No. 12 ranked duo and will begin in Wednesday’s main draw after earning All-American honors last season. The pair made a run to the quarterfinals a year ago before bowing out to Cal opponents. Ray and Stammel open at No. 37 in the doubles rankings and Yamakita, along with fellow freshman Erin Pearce, begin their collegiate career ranked No. 43. Yamakita also sits at No. 15 in the ITA’s newcomer rankings.

“I’m eager to see our freshmen, Mia and Erin, compete together in their first collegiate competition as a doubles team,” Tsoubanos said. “It is the longest, most competitive event of the fall, but we’ve prepared well and I look forward to this first opportunity for our players to earn qualification into the NCAA individual championships later in November.”

The ITA All-American Championships is a qualifying tournament for the NCAA Singles & Doubles Championships. 10 singles players will qualify for the NCAA Singles Championship, consisting of eight main draw quarterfinalists and two feed-in consolation finalists, while four doubles teams will qualify for the NCAA Doubles Championship. The individual championships will take place November 18-23 at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida. The women’s All-American tournament page is available online.
