NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Vanderbilt offense enjoyed its best performance of the year Tuesday night with a 12-1 over Wofford at Hawkins Field.
The second-ranked Commodores scored two runs in the first inning and never trailed scoring at least one run in four of their eight at-bats. The seventh inning put the game away when the Dores sent 10 men to the plate with five runs scoring on six hits. Eight different VU players had at least one hit led by Tony Kemp, Anthony Gomez, Aaron Westlake and Jason Esposito who all had two hits apiece. Westlake and Gomez both collected two RBI each with Westlake scoring three runs in the win. On the night 22 Commodores saw action with four freshman receiving playing time for the first time this year. Joel McKeithan, Josh Lee, Spencer Navin and Will Johnson, who singled in his lone at-bat, all played in their first collegiate game.
The Commodores offensive output is the team’s highest of the season surpassing the eight runs scored against Stanford in an 8-7 win February 26.
Freshman T.J. Pecoraro earned his second win in as many starts turning in five solid innings. The right-hander allowed one run on three hits with no walks and eight strikeouts. Wofford starter Drew Sheridan took the loss for the Terriers giving up seven runs, three earned, on five hits across four innings. Three left-handed relievers followed Pecoraro for the Commodores. Corey Williams pitched two scoreless innings with Steven Rice and Sam Selman pitching one scoreless frame apiece.
Vandy welcomes Kennesaw State to Hawkins Field tomorrow afternoon with first pitch scheduled for 4 p.m. Freshman southpaw Kevin Ziomek makes his first home start for the Commodores.
