After a disappointing performance in doubles qualifiers, the Commodores bounced back, advancing two to the singles main draw of the Riviera/ITA All-American held in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
“You know doubles didn’t go as well as we had hoped, but singles went a lot better”, said head coach Geoff Macdonald. “Courtney (Colton) had two wins and Sydney (Campbell) had two wins, and out here that’s really good. Any win out here at the All-American is outstanding because everyone is Top-80, Top-90, in the country. So I’d say we had two very good wins.”
No. 50, Sydney Campbell, began her first singles appearance in the ITA All-American facing off against No. 38 [13] Giuliana Olmos. Campbell defeated the junior from Southern Cal, 6-4, 6-3. The native from Franklin, Tenn. advanced to second round play, ousting UNC’s No. 70, Ashley Dai, 6-4, 6-1.
Courtney Colton improved from last year’s 0-1 showing at the 2014 Riviera, defeating both singles opponents in Tuesday’s tournament play. In the first round, No. 63 Colton defeated UCLA’s No. 57 Catherine Harrison, 6-2, 6-4. The junior’s second round matchup was a bit more challenging, overpowering No. 29 [8] Quinn Gleason, 6-3, 3-6, 7-5.
Vanderbilt’s No. 82 Marie Casares was defeated in the first round of qualifiers by Texas A&M’s, No. 34 [10] Saska Gavrilovska, 6-1, 6-4. Casares will have the opportunity to compete in tomorrow’s singles consolation rounds.
