College Station, Texas – No. 8 Vanderbilt was no-hit on Saturday afternoon at No. 2 Texas A&M in a 3-0 loss at Blue Bell Park to drop the series.
Aggies’ (37-10, 16-8) starter Kyle Simonds kept the Commodores (36-12, 14-10) off balance all day allowing only Bryan Reynolds to reach on a throwing error by shortstop Austin Homan in the first inning. Simonds did the rest from there, retiring the next 22 batters to carry his no-hit bid into the ninth inning. The Aggies’ defense was up to the task as Simonds made a nice play on a ball up the middle by Tyler Campbell for the first out of the inning. Freshman Connor Kaiser looked to have ended the bid with a soft line drive to center field but Nick Choruby’s diving catch in shallow center field kept the bid alive. Up with two outs, Jeren Kendall ripped a line drive directly into the glove of Simonds standing on the mound for the final out of the game.
Patrick Raby took the loss for Vanderbilt giving up two runs on four hits. The freshman kept the Aggies off the scoreboard until Homan hit a one-out, solo homer to left field for the game’s first run. JB Moss followed with a single to left field before Raby was able to get an out. Matt Ruppenthal was called on to face Boomer White with one down but White singled for the third time in the game to make it 2-0 Aggies. Texas A&M tacked on an unearned run in the seventh against John Kilichowski.
Vanderbilt returns to action Tuesday night at Hawkins Field against No. 9 Louisville in the Battle of the Barrel at 6 p.m. on SEC Network.
