Four earn Scholar-Athlete recognition

Four members of the Vanderbilt women’s tennis team, which advanced to the 2004 NCAA Final Four, earned Scholar-Athlete status from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association as the Commodores were named an ITA All-Academic Team in 2003-04 for the third year in a row.

Recent VU graduates Kelly Schmandt and Aleke Tsoubanos joined rising seniors Audra Falk and Annie Menees as ITA Scholar-Athletes. All four women maintained a grade point of at least 3.5 for the past school year.

While four other Southeastern Conference squads held the 3.2 cumulative grade point average necessary to be named an All-Academic Team, Vanderbilt was the only SEC team to pair that recognition with a trip to the NCAA National Tournament in Athens, Ga.

Schmandt and Tsoubanos ended their Vanderbilt careers with a fourth-straight trip to the NCAA Round of 16. The pair helped lead the Commodores to the Final Four for the second time in four years.

Falk, an All-American and NCAA Quarterfinalist in 2004, and Menees, a CoSIDA Academic All-American, have Vanderbilt eyeing an 11th-straight postseason berth in 2005.
