CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Friday morning the Vanderbilt women’s tennis team opened its final individual tournament, before officially kicking off the dual season.
Competing in the Miami Spring Invitational, the Dores went 6-2 in singles and 1-3 in doubles versus opponents from Kentucky and Miami.
“Overall, I thought it was a good first day,” said associate head coach Aleke Tsoubanos. “Miami outplayed us on three out of four courts in doubles and we have some improvement to do there. I was really happy with how we turned that around and competed beautifully in singles on every court.
As expected we had some highly competitive matches with a familiar SEC foe in Kentucky and that will continue with play tomorrow. I’m happy for Amanda to get a win playing here today in her home state. And we’re looking forward to seeing if we can build on and learn from today with some great matches tomorrow.”
No. 10 Christina Rosca earned sixth ranked victory of the year as the sophomore rebounded from a first set loss to defeat UK’s 26th-ranked Akvile Parazinskaite in three competitive sets, 1-6, 7-6 (7-2), 6-1. Other Friday singles victors include, No. 4 Fernanda Contreras, Lauren Gish, Emma Kurtz, Amanda Meyer and senior Payton Robinette.
Contreras and Emily Smith captured the Dores lone doubles victory as the pairing edged out the Hurricane’s Sinead Lohan/Daniella Roldan; 7-5. The Commodores 19th-ranked Emma Kurtz and Christina Rosca suffered their fifth loss of the season against Ana Madcur and Estela Perez-Somarriba.
