The Vanderbilt women’s tennis team opens its 2014-15 season in Greenville, S.C. at the 28th annual Furman Fall Classic, a three-day tournament lasting from September 26-28 at the Mickel Tennis Center.
With the field consisting of six teams ranked in the top 34, the Commodores are in for a challenging weekend. Vandy’s No. 11 ranking is the second highest ranking of the event with the Alabama Crimson Tide coming in at No. 6.
“To my mind it’s the best fall tournament in college tennis,” said head coach Geoff Macdonald. “It will be great after a lay off with a lot of practice to finally compete against great competition. This tournament a really good warm-up for the four players going out to the Riviera All-American, but for every player on the team it’s going to be great just to start the fall season and begin playing matches.”
While the competition is fierce, it is the blooming cohesion and relationship between the 2014 team that Macdonald is also looking forward to experiencing.
“It will be great to complete and be together as a team. The other thing that’s great about this tournament is that you can bond as a team and watch each other compete. Everybody chips in a helps each other out on the court, it’s a great team-building tournament.”
The tournament will start with doubles play at 9 a.m. on Friday, followed by singles action at 1 p.m. Play will continue on Saturday and Sunday, beginning at 9 a.m. each day.
