Commodores Fall to No. 18 Georgia

ATHENS, Ga. – Kayla Overbeck had a career-night with a game-high 21 points to lead the Vanderbilt women’s basketball team (6-19, 2-9 SEC) but they couldn’t overcome the No. 18 Georgia Bulldogs in a 67-55 road loss on Thursday night.

How It Happened
First Quarter: Georgia 21, Vanderbilt 12
Georgia opened the game with an 8-2 run forcing White to call a timeout at the 7:01 mark. The Dores, who had just a pair of free throws from Cierra Walker until the 6:46 mark, when Kayla Overbeck got Vanderbilt on the board. Vanderbilt was as close as four points but a 5-0 Georgia run took the lead all the way to nine points. Newby ended a 3:10 scoring drought with a bucket in the paint but the Bulldogs shot 44 percent in the first quarter and took a 21-13 lead at the break despite a last second bucket from Overbeck who had six first-quarter points and was perfect 3-of-3 from the field.

Second Quarter: Georgia 36, Vanderbilt 22
Trailing by 12 to open, the Dores utilized a mismatch inside and were able to lean on Overbeck who was 6-of-7 from the floor in the first half. She used four early points to get the Georgia lead down to five points, 27-22, at the 5:11 mark. Georgia closed the quarter on a 10-3 run and held Vanderbilt to just one bucket in the final five minutes take a 36-22 lead at the break but not before Chelsie Hall drilled a triple as time expired.

Third Quarter: Georgia 53, Vanderbilt 37
Georgia opened the third quarter with a 7-2 run and took a 14-point lead at the 7:06 mark forcing White to call a timeout. Outside of Overbeck, the Commodores couldn’t get any offense going and shot just 33 percent in the quarter. A bucket from Overbeck put the Georgia lead to nine points with just a minute off the clock but Georgia’s lead swelled to 18 points at the 6:35 mark and Vanderbilt could only get as close as 13 points the remainder of the quarter.

Fourth Quarter: Georgia 67, Vanderbilt 55
Georgia took its largest lead of the game, 61-39, on a jumper from Gabby Connally and the Dores battled back to within in 14 points with a three-point play from Overbeck midway through the quarter and a triple from Christa Reed. A tip-in sealed an 8-0 Vanderbilt run but the lead never got under double digits the rest of the way in the loss.

Inside the Lane
-Kayla Overbeck reached double figures for the fourth straight game with 21 points. She also set a new career high and recorded her first career 20-point game.

-Christa Reed moves eight points from 1,000 with eight points.

-The Commodores move to 0-7 against ranked opponents this season.
