CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – After upsetting No. 4 Duke yesterday during day one of consolation play at the ITA National Team Indoor Championships, the No. 11 Vanderbilt Commodores fell to the No. 16 Oklahoma State Cowgirls, 4-2. With the loss the Commodores are now 4-2 on the season.
The Commodores began the last day of tournament play in Charlottesville, Va. falling for the first time this season in doubles action.
Ranked 32nd by the ITA, Sydney Campbell and Courtney Colton fell to the Cowgirls 5th ranked tandem of Viktoriya Lushkova and Kelsey Laurente; 6-1. With the loss the pair is now 4-1 in dual-match play. In Vandy’s second spot of the doubles lineup, Ashleigh Antal and Marie Casares fell to Vladica Babic and Katarina Adamovic; 6-3.
With the doubles point lost, the Commodores relied on their stellar singles play to pull them out of the deficit.
Astra Sharma leveled the score to 1-all with her defeat of the Cowgirls’ Vladica Babic; 6-2, 6-2. With the victory the sophomore is on a five-match win streak, her longest run so far as a Commodore.
Oklahoma State took the lead once again as Carla Tur Mari defeated the `Dores No. 77 Marie Casares; 6-3, 6-1 at No. 5 singles.
Junior Frances Altick added another ranked win to her arsenal as she defeated No. 53 Katarina Adamovic 6-2, 6-2, tying the match at 2-all and giving VU the opportunity to take the match.
No. 15 Sydney Campbell was defeated by No. 10 Viktoriya Lushkova after coming out victorious in her first set; 6-4. The sophomore could not hold on to the lead falling in the second and third sets, 6-2.
Both teams were in a race to the finish on courts two and six. Courtney Colton was on match point at No. 2 doubles, but it was court six to finish first. Ashleigh Antal was defeated in a hard three set match, giving the Cowgirls their fourth and final point.
Vanderbilt will remain on the road as they travel to the west coast, taking on Southern Cal on Feb. 14th and Stanford on the 15th.
