STARKVILLE, Miss. — Vanderbilt dropped the series finale to No. 6 Mississippi State, 17-7 in seven innings on Sunday afternoon at Dudy Noble Field.
The Bulldogs totaled 19 hits and scored runs in all seven innings.
Mississippi State jumped out to a six-run lead in the first inning on four hits including a three-run homer.
The Dores answered with three solo homers in the top of the second to cut the deficit in half.
Mike Mancini and Rustan Rigdon went back-to-back and Ryker Waite left the yard later in the frame to make it a 6-3 game.
The Bulldogs then went deep in the bottom of the second, going up 8-3 on a two-run shot.
Four runs on four hits and an error in the bottom of the third helped Mississippi State take a 12-3 advantage.
Vandy got some runs back in the top of the fourth with a three-run home run off the bat of Logan Johnstone.
But once again, the Bulldogs answered with a run on the home half of the frame to go up 13-6.
A solo homer by Mississippi State in the bottom of the fifth to stretch its lead to eight.
Mack Whitcomb knocked a pinch-hit, RBI single in the sixth for Vandy’s seventh run of the day.
The Bulldogs added on in the sixth and seven innings to run-rule the Commodores, 17-7.
Vanderbilt returns home to host Tennessee Tech on Tuesday followed by a three-game series against No. 22 Tennessee over the weekend.
