Nashville, Tenn. – No. 2 Vanderbilt dropped Buffalo 4-2 Wednesday afternoon at Hawkins Field.
The Commodores (16-2) led 2-1 entering the bottom of the sixth inning when Rhett Wiseman belted a one-out double into the right-center field gap. After a walk to Joel McKeithan put runners on first and second Tony Kemp laced his 18th career triple into the right field corner scoring both runs to push the Dores lead to 4-1. Those two runs would be the difference as the Bulls (7-8) scratched out a run in the top of the ninth off the VU bullpen and threatened to tie the game. Down to his last strike Buffalo shortstop Michael Burke singled up the middle with two outs to cut the Vandy lead to two runs and put runners on the corners. The Dores went back to the pen for Brian Miller, who notched his fourth save of the season getting the final batter of the game to fly out to center field.
Vanderbilt starter Walker Buehler (2-0) was strong for the second straight week turning in six innings to earn his second win of the season. The freshman cruised through four no-hit innings allowing only a walk. Buehler ran into trouble in the fifth when he walked back-to-back batters and allowed a single to load the bases. The Bulls scored a run win the right-hander bounced a wild pitch to the backstop before the freshman responded with a strikeout to end the threat. Buehler allowed one run on two hits with three walks and seven strikeouts. Fellow freshman Carson Fulmer tossed two scoreless frames with one strikeout.
The Dores struck first with a run in the second inning without a hit. An error kept the inning alive and Wiseman cashed in on the opportunity with a sacrifice fly to center. Vince Conde’s sacrifice fly in the fourth plated the home team’s second run. Kemp led the way going 2-for-3 with two stolen bases. Jim Topps led the Bulls with a pair of hits as starter Zach Stephens (0-1) took the loss allowing four runs, three earned, on seven hits over six innings.
