Commodores cruise by Georgia

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The third-ranked Vanderbilt women’s tennis team earned its fourth top-10 victory this season in a 4-2 victory over No. 9 Georgia Sunday afternoon.

With the win, the Commodores improve to 14-3 overall and 7-1 in Southeastern Conference play.

Sunday’s contest began with stellar doubles play by the Commodores, as the squad picked up 6-3 wins on courts two and three.

VU’s unranked Emily Smith and Emma Kurtz picked up a victory over the highest ranked duo of their careers on court two, defeating UGA’s ninth-ranked Mariana Gould and Katarina Jokic, 6-3. Amanda Meyer and Christina Rosca clinched the tandems point on court three, handing Kennedy Shaffer and Annette Goulak a 6-3 loss.

No. 21 Fernanda Contreras and Astra Sharma trailed No. 11 Elena Christofi and Morgan Coppoc 5-4 at the conclusion of doubles.

In singles action, the Commodores tore through first sets, taking five-of-six opening sets.

No. 5 Contreras earned another ranked victory as the junior from Austin, Texas downed No. 45 Shaffer in straight sets 6-1, 6-3. The Bulldogs answered the Commodore victory with one of their own. On court five, Gould defeated Kurtz 6-3, 6-2 for what would be the Bulldogs’ one win of the day.

No. 14 Sharma gave VU the 3-1 advantage, earning a top-10 victory with a 6-4, 6-3 win on court one over No. 6 Jokic. The victory was Sharma’s 105th career victory, who now boasts an impressive 105-30 record.

No. 39 Rosca clinched the top-10 victory in a tight contest, defeating 2017 All-American Christofi 7-5, 6-4. At the conclusion of the match, Vandy’s 97th-ranked Meyer and UGA’s No. 81 Gonzalez were tied at 4-all in the third set while Georgia’s No. 110 Coppoc led Summer Dvorak 5-3 in the third set.

Vanderbilt remains at home next weekend, facing Kentucky on the 31st at noon.
