Oct. 18, 2015

LAFAYETTE, Ind. – After a hard few days of work several Commodores remain undefeated and are slated to compete in Sunday’s singles quarterfinals and doubles tournament semifinals at the USTA/ITA Ohio Valley Regional Championships.

In doubles action, VU is will be well represented with two teams making it to tournament semifinals. A trio of ranked Commodores are set to compete in Sunday’s quarterfinals in the singles championship.

Vandy began Saturday’s regional play going 2-1 in doubles action. Frances Altick and Summer Dvorak fell in a close 8-5 loss to third-seeded Sohn/Wind out of Memphis.

But an All-Commodore final could be on the horizon, as Sydney Campbell and Fernanda Contreras are still competing on the opposite of the bracket from undefeated Courtney Colton and Astra Sharma. All remaining teams in regional play are the top-four doubles seeds of the tournament draw.

Fourth-seeded Campbell and Contreras defeated Kentucky’s Mikulskyte/Parazinskaite 8-4, to take on another pair of wildcats in top-seeded Adachi/Sutjiadi at 8:30 am CT in semis.

Saturday morning the second-seeded Commodore pair gave up a tournament-high five games in their 8-5 victory at Purdue’s Schwartz Tennis Center. With a few tips from Altick and Dvorak, Colton and Sharma look to avenge their teammates loss as the duo takes on Memphis’ Sohn/Wind in semifinals.

After not dropping a single set all day, the Vanderbilt trio of Campbell, Altick and Sharma look to continue their tournament runs.

Top-seeded No. 7 Campbell defeated Tennessee’s ninth-seeded Repic in a commanding 6-2, 6-0 victory. Altick followed suit, with a victory over Memphis’ Wind; 6-3, 6-1. Following UK’s upset 6-3; 7-6(1) victory Courntey Colton, Astra Sharma closed out the day for Vanderbilt with a win, overpowering Kentucky’s Morgan Chumney 6-2, 7-6 (5).
