CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The second-ranked Vanderbilt women’s tennis team continued day two of action from South Beach Saturday afternoon, competing in the Miami Spring Invitational.
Facing Miami in singles and predominately the Ohio State Buckeyes in doubles, VU amassed a 2-2 tandems record and 2-5 singles slate. Three of the Commodore’s singles losses came in three tough set competitions.
“We had another great day in terms of the way we competed,” said associate head coach Aleke Tsoubanos. “Doubles was an improvement from yesterday in terms of energy and assignments, but we could look to be a bit more opportunistic and aggressive tomorrow against Kentucky. five of the top six singles matches went to three sets with Miami and we came up short in a few of them, but we certainly gave ourselves opportunities. Tomorrow will be a great test of fitness and mental toughness to see how we can close out the weekend.”
In singles, two of Vanderbilt’s three ranked student-athletes picked up wins for the black and gold. No. 19 Christina Rosca closed out the Cane’s Ana Madcur in three competitive sets, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4. 96th-ranked Summer Dvorak defeated Miami’s Dominika Patrova; 6-1, 4-5, 6-2. Fourth-ranked Fernanda Contreras fell to No. 36 Estela Perez-Somarriba in another three-setter, 7-5, 3-6, 6-2.
Vandy experimented with doubles pairings on Saturday. Contreras and Dvorak earned their first win career win as a pairing, teaming up for the first time since the Miami Spring Invite their freshmen year. Contreras/Dvorak defeated OSU’s Mary Beth Hurley and Olivia Sneed, 7-6(2). Amanda Meyer and Emily Smith picked up their third career victory, which came against Emma DeCoste and Danielle Wolf; 6-4.
The final day of the Miami Spring Invitational will begin tomorrow at 8 a.m. CT.
