NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Members of the Vanderbilt women’s tennis team have been hard at work over their Thanksgiving break, competing in the Nashville Shores 25K.
Hosted on Vanderbilt’s home courts, Astra Sharma and Sydney Campbell kicked off main draw singles competition in the round of 32 on Wednesday evening. Sharma opened up the pro tournament with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Canada’s Charlotte Robillard-Millette.
Campbell, a senior out of Franklin, Tenn., faced three-time ITA champion Francesca Di Lorenzo. The Ohio State sophomore pulled off the first set over Campbell, 6-4 and advanced into the round of sixteen taking a few key deuce points and the final set 6-2.
In main draw tandems, Georgina Sellyn paired up with Sharma after earning a wild card entry. The duo downed the top seeded pairing of Keri Wong and Renata Zarazua, both ranked in the ITF doubles top-260, by winning a third set ten-point tiebreaker, 5-7,7-5, 10-3.
The Commodores will continue pro tournament play at the Currey Tennis Center Wednesday afternoon.
