SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico – Continuing play in the Puerto Rico Fall Classic, the Vanderbilt women’s tennis team secured three singles victories.
“Very tough matches with Georgia today. We had some great efforts and a lot of learning today. Good wins for three of our players with some very hard-fought losses too. We will need to improve on doubles,” said head coach Geoff Macdonald.
The Commodores started slow in doubles, with all three pairs falling short to No. 2 Georgia duos.
Bouncing back in singles, Vanderbilt fought back to claim three victories. Freshman Marcella Cruz advanced her perfect collegiate singles record to 2-0 after defeating Georgia’s No. 28 Vivian Wolff. The freshman battled through a grueling three sets to come out on top, 4-6, 7-6 93), 6-4.
Remaining undefeated in the Classic, junior Amanda Meyer held Wake Forest’s Pesavento to only two games in the first set followed by a 6-1 domination in the second set to claim the victory.
Collecting Vanderbilt’s third singles victory of the day, sophomore Georgia Drummy took down Georgia’s No. 24 Marta Gonzalez in straight sets, 7-5, 7-6.
Vanderbilt will be back in action on Sunday at 7 a.m. CT to wrap up the Puerto Rico Fall Classic.
