Commodores Conquer Coral Gables

Vanderbilt completes singles sweep in final day of Miami Spring Invite

CORAL GABLES, Fla. — Day three was nearly perfect for No. 21 Vanderbilt women’s tennis at the Miami Spring Invite, with the Dores going unbeaten in singles play on Sunday.

“I love this tournament because we get such good competition in before kicking off the dual match season,” Head Coach Aleke Tsoubanos said. “It was a weekend of four top-25 teams going at it with each other, and overall I think we competed pretty well.”

Vandy bounced back from the receiving end of a doubles sweep against Oklahoma earlier in the day. Senior Célia-Belle Mohr shifted the momentum for the Dores in singles against Miami’s Jaquelyn Ogunwale. Mohr clinched the opener 6-2 before overcoming a 4-1 game deficit in the second, taking the set 7-6 (5) and claiming the match. No. 78 ranked sophomore Valeria Ray followed with a win soon after, outlasting Xinyi Nong of Miami for a 6-3, 4-6, 6-0 victory. Mohr and Ray both complete an undefeated weekend of singles play at the event.

No. 26 ranked junior Bridget Stammel notched the third singles win of the day for Vanderbilt over Miami’s No. 70 Raquel Gonzalez. After a back-and-forth first two sets, Stammel locked down the third en route to a 7-6 (5), 6-7 (3), 6-1 win. Freshman Trinetra Vijayakumar continued the push from the Dores in a matchup against Aely Arai of Miami. The match also went to a third set, with Vijayakumar pulling out a 6-1, 5-7, 6-3 result over the Hurricane.

Junior Sonya Macavei kicked off the second wave of singles action against Miami’s Savannah Webster. Macavei cruised to a 6-1, 6-3 win, her first singles triumph of the weekend. Freshman Sophia Webster, adjacent to her sister’s match versus Macavei, battled to a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Maria Paula Vargas of Miami. Senior Amy Stevens took on Oklahoma’s Emma Ghirardato in the final match of the invite for the Commodores. Stevens sealed a flawless singles Sunday for Vanderbilt, defeating the Sooner 6-4, 1-6, 6-4.

“We picked up some good wins, but the main focus was to use this to get ready for our season opener next week,” Tsoubanos said. “It wasn’t the best start of the day with doubles this morning, but we challenged the team to regroup and they did a great job of that in singles. They got some really impressive results against a very good Miami team. We had five or six tough days of practice and conditioning leading into this, and I feel like we’re in a good place physically. I look forward to competing again next Sunday at home.”

Up next for Vanderbilt is its first team scoring event of the season, a home doubleheader against SMU and Western Kentucky on Jan. 19. The Dores are set to open play against the Mustangs at 11 a.m., with the second match slated for a 5 p.m. start against the Hilltoppers.
