Commodores cap Miami Spring Invite

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The Commodores capped the Miami Spring Invite falling 2-6 to the Hurricanes Sunday afternoon. However the team picked up invaluable experience throughout the weekend, competing against highly touted teams.

“Yesterday was a great day,” said head coach Geoff Macdonald. “Today I felt Miami played phenomenal tennis. I think Sydney [Campbell] had a phenomenal win over Stephanie Wagner. Marie [Casares] played a beautifully solid match. I give Miami credit in the other positions, because they were tough. The silver lining is that I today showed us what we need to do to become a better team and we’re going to talk about that. You have to learn that when you lose, you have to be able to learn from it.”

Both No. 15 Sydney Campbell and No. 77 Marie Casares bolstered their resumes with solid ranked wins Sunday. Campbell defeated Miami’s No. 7 singles player in Stephanie Wagner. Campbell, a sophomore, squared off against Wagner in the fall at ITA All-American Championships, losing in three sets; 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.

This go around Campbell dropped the first set 2-6, but battled through a tiebreak to win the second set 7-6. The sophomore from Franklin, Tenn. clinched the match with a perfect 6-0 third set over the Hurricane junior.

Casares earned her second ranked win of the year, after defeating the No. 69 player in tournament season. Casares finished off the invite defeating No. 94 Lina Lileikite; 6-3, 6-3. Both Casares and Campbell own perfect 3-0 slates.

The Commodores will begin preparations to host the ITA Kick-Off weekend, which takes place this Saturday and Sunday inside the Currey Tennis Center. After competing with Texas this past weekend in Miami, the Longhorns travel to West End along with DePaul and Harvard.

“Texas is a great team. It’s going to be a very different match though. The final day of Kick-Off is a wild match and we’re going to have to get ready for it and work hard this week. Miami was really good experience for us in teams of ‘hey, this is how good people are’.”

Kick-Off Weekend match play begins Saturday at 10 a.m. with the No. 11 Commodores taking on Harvard.
