NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The top-ranked Vanderbilt women’s tennis team wrapped up its annual June Stewart Invitational Sunday afternoon, going 2-1 in doubles and 5-1 in singles play.

The weekend’s events allowed the Commodores to try out new doubles pairings, and allow freshmen and many student-athletes outside of last season’s top six chances to gain invaluable experience before the regular season begins.

“I’m really pleased with the way we played today,” said head coach Geoff Macdonald. “Sometimes on the third day you can be a little mentally tired, and I thought we played rally well. I’m really pleased with the freshmen’s development. I thought Maggie Leavell, even thought she lost, played a really good second set and found her game. Sydney Campbell also played a very good match. I can’t fault anyone today, it was just a good day. Now we get to practice and work on what we’ve learned from these tournaments.”

Vanderbilt took the courts in doubles action to begin their final day of play, taking teams from Auburn and Ole Miss. VU came out on fire, with the spirited team of Astra Sharma and Summer Dvorak coming out with the first victory of the day, 6-2 over the Tigers’ Muller/Michaud.

Ellie Yates and Sydney Campbell followed the pair with a decisive win of their own, as the tandem only allowed the Rebel’s Khairudinova/Sanford three games in their 6-3 victory. Vanderbilt’s Maggie Leavell and Payton Robinette fell 6-0 to AU’s Turner/Griffin to round off the morning’s doubles action.

In singles the Commodores faced the Indiana Hoosiers, playing dominate tennis and acquiring five victories for the black and gold.

For the third day in a row VU’s newest commodores took control of their courts, with both freshmen earning big wins, and only allowing each of their opponents one lone game in the first set.

Senior Maggie Leavell gave a commanding performance against IU’s Danielle Wolf, dropping the first set 6-1, but battled the Hoosier the entire second set for a near victory.

Vanderbilt’s team now takes a break before Frances Altick heads up north to New York to compete in the USTA National Indoor Championships beginning on Nov. 12th.
