The Commodores set the school record for most victories in a season with 45. The previous mark was 37 in 1974. The 16 SEC wins set a school record for most league wins in a season. Vanderbilt made its first ever appearance in the NCAA Super Regional (Austin, Texas) The Commodores made their fourth NCAA Tournament appearance, first since 1980. Warner Jones was named to the Baseball America All-America first team as a designated hitter. He is the first Commodore to ever earn first team honors by Baseball America. The Commodores won 18 of their last 24 games, including eight consecutive before finishing runnerup in the SEC Tournament. The Commodores owned a 11-1 record in midweek games. Vanderbilt’s .703 win percentage was the third highest in the SEC behind World Series teams South Carolina (.757) and LSU (.708). The Commodores 53.3 percentage in SEC play is the first winning percentage since 1980. Vanderbilt made its second consecutive appearance in the SEC Tournament – 10th overall – and was runnerup to South Carolina who defeated VU 3-2 in the championship game. The Commodores won five SEC series, including sweeps over Georgia, Mississippi State and Kentucky. The Mississippi State sweep was the first ever in school history. The Commodores were the only team in the SEC to rank among the top five in batting average (4th), earned run average (1st) and fielding percentage (1st). A school record five players were named to the SEC All-Tournament Team, including first baseman/DH Cesar Nicolas, second baseman Warner Jones, shortstop Ryan Klosterman, catcher Jonathan Douillard, and left-handed pitcher Jeremy Sowers. The Commodores led the SEC and were second in the nation in fielding with a school record .978 percentage. VU was error-free in 30 games. In two seasons under Corbin, VU has registered 49 games without an error. Warner Jones led the SEC in batting with a .414 average – the only player in the league to bat above .400. Warner Jones and Ryan Klosterman earned All-SEC First Team honors, while Jeremy Sowers earned Second Team honors Seven Commodores were named to the NCAA Charlottesville Regional All-Tournament Team, including Warner Jones (2B), Ryan Klosterman (SS), Cesar Nicolas (DH), Jeremy Sowers (LHP) and outfielders Aaron Garza, Antoan Richardson, and Worth Scott. Nicolas earned Most Outstanding Player honors. Warner Jones earned SEC Player of the Week once; Ryan Mullins earned SEC Pitcher of the Week once, and Jeremy Sowers was named SEC Pitcher of the Week twice during the season. It marked the first time in school history that Commodores earned Player of the Week honors four times in one season. Warner Jones earned National Hitter of the Week (3/29) when he hit .737 in four games helping lead the Commodores to a 4-0 record for the week, including a three-game sweep of #24 Georgia. He went 14-19 with six doubles, one triple and one home run. Aaron Garza and Carter Hawkins were named to the SEC Freshmen Academic Honor Roll. 22 Commodores earned a 3.0 GPA or better for the 2004 Spring semester. Ryan Klosterman was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-America District IV Team. Worth Scott was named to the SEC Good Works Team. Five Commodores were named to the SEBaseball All-SEC Team, including Warner Jones, Jeremy Sowers, Ryan Mullins, Cesar Nicolas and Ryan Klosterman. Left-handed pitcher Jeremy Sowers became the third Vanderbilt pitcher in history – the first since 1979 – to record 10 victories in a season. Head Coach Tim Corbin reached 50 career wins faster than any other baseball coach in VU history. He earned his 50th victory in his 85th game. Corbin’s 60.5 win percentage is first among VU coaches who have coached at least 50 games. He is the only coach in school history to have coached more than 50 games and won at least 60 percent of them. His win total through two seasons easily represents the highest in school history. A school record five players were drafted on the first day with a total of seven players taken overall in the Major League Baseball Draft. Jeremy Sowers was the #6 pick overall (Cleveland). It marked the ninth consecutive season in which at least one Commodore player has been drafted. Also drafted were Cesar Nicolas (5th round, Arizona), Ryan Klosterman (5th round, Toronto), Antoan Richardson (13th round, Arizona), Jeff Sues (14th round, Cleveland), Jonathan Douillard (28th round, Chicago Cubs), and Ryan Rote (37th round, New York Yankees).
