GREENVILLE, S.C. – Tough competition was not the only thing the Vanderbilt women’s tennis team faced Friday during opening day of the Furman Fall Classic. Rain delayed tournament play, forcing teams from all eight participating universities to compete inside, four at a time.
However Vandy is used to playing inside, and the results showed. Doubles was on the agenda all day with the Commodores playing three matches a piece. Courtney Colton and Fernanda Contreras competed hard all day, and won third place in their flight after defeating teams from No. 29 South Carolina (8-4 (2)) and Iowa (8-6).
Frances Altick and Summer Dvorak also went 2-3 on the day, defeating Iowa’s Douglas/Dohanics 8-5 in first round action, and Furman’s Speaks/Weymouth 8-5 in the third round to earn 7th place.
Seniors Ellie Yates and Maggie Leavell teamed up once again, falling in three close matches; 8-4, 8-6 and 8-5.
In between matches the `Dores stayed out of the rain, getting to know the newest Commodores and building team camaraderie by challenging one another in Ping-Pong and foosball.
With singles action postponed, the `Dores will play two matches Saturday and flight championships Sunday. First rounds are scheduled to begin at 8:00 am CT, but with weather expected to be an issue all weekend times are lenient. For updates follow @VandyWTennis on Twitter.
