DURHAM, N.C — Casey Weathers, a rising senior at Vanderbilt, has been added as a relief pitcher to the USA Baseball National Team. Weathers replaces Florida’s Bryan Augenstein who left the team earlier this week. He is the third Commodore on the team, joining starting pitcher David Price and third baseman Pedro Alvarez. “It is an honor to be asked to join Team USA,” said Weathers. “I am excited that I get to join the best college players in the country and hope to get an opportunity to help the team out in any way that I can.” “Casey put up some outstanding numbers in Alaska and we look for him to be able to come in and help us as a righthanded pitcher out of the bullpen,” said National Team and Vanderbilt head coach Tim Corbin. Weathers had an impressive summer playing for the Anchorage Glacier Pilots of the Alaska Baseball League. He was 1-0 in 18 relief appearances with eight saves and a 0.84 ERA. He struck out 25 batters in 21.1 innings with six walks, while limiting them to just an .085 batting average. He was drafted by the Detroit Tigers in the 25th round of the 2006 Major League Baseball Amateur Draft after going 1-1 with a 3.33 ERA in 21 appearances in his first season in Nashville. The California native struck out 38 batters in 27 innings with three saves on the year. |
