Campbell wins USTA/ITA Regional singles championship

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Commodores ended the USTA/ITA Ohio Valley Regional on a high note, as Sydney Campbell punched her ticket to the National Indoors Championships. The sophomore faced fellow teammate and doubles partner Courtney Colton for the championship title.

“A very successful weekend I thought”, said head coach Geoff Macdonald. “We had five in the quarters, four in the semis, and the doubles team in the finals. Everyone did really well so it’s hard to single any one person out. Courtney (Colton) continued a very successful fall. Ashleigh Antal and Astra Sharma made it to the semis, which is just great. And Ellie (Yates) getting to the quarters…really really good. Marie (Casares) lost a heartbreaker in the first round to a really good player. It was a lot of tennis so we’re all a little tired, but I’m really pleased with the progress we’ve made. There were a lot of really quality wins. This weekend gave great competition and experience for the team. It was the best regional we’ve ever had.”

Ranked No. 17 in the country, the duo of Sydney Campbell and Courtney Colton, lost to the No. 1 seed in the tournament from Kentucky; 6-2, 7-5. However the tandems day was not quite over, with the singles championship still in reach for both Commodores.

The two dueled for a chance to compete in the National Indoor Championships, which take place Nov. 6-9 at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, NY. Sophomore Sydney Campbell came out victorious as the No. 1 seed, defeating her teammate; 6-2, 6-3. This is Campbell’s second singles tournament win of the fall, with her first coming from a flight championship at the Furman Fall Classic. Last season Campbell made it to the regional’s round of 32.

The `Dores stay on the road traveling to Oxford, Miss. for the Ole Miss Invitational; a three-day tournament stretching from Oct. 24-26.
