Campbell falls, begins consolation round competition

After a successful run in her first Riviera/ITA All-American tournament, No. 50 Sydney Campbell was defeated this afternoon in the first round of main draw competition by No. 18 Stephanie Wagner, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.

“Sydney (Campbell) fell to Wagner in three sets, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3, but we’re looking forward to her competing in the back draw”, said head coach Geoff Macdonald. “This tournament has been an excellent experience for her. These players are all Top-30 caliber athletes, so we will see what happens with the redraw tonight and prepare for tomorrow.”

Campbell takes on Michigan’s Ronit Yurovsky tomorrow morning in the first main draw consolation round. Yurovsky, currently ranked No. 21 by the ITA, went 14-4 last season playing in the No. 2 position in the Wolverines’ lineup.

The Vanderbilt sophomore beings play at 12:45 p.m. CT tomorrow afternoon, with all matches taking place at the Riviera Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
