FLUSHING MEADOWS, N.Y. – The Vanderbilt women’s team began consolation rounds this morning at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships in Flushing, NY. Sydney Campbell defeated the No. 3 player in the country in the first round of tournament back draw action.
“Sydney (Campbell) had a great match today against one of the top athletes in college tennis,” said head coach Geoff Macdonald. “She really played a complete match which was great to see, because she’s really had a couple of tough losses this fall. Sydney had some really great serves throughout the match, and I’m just really proud of her effort out there today.”
Both No. 50 Campbell and No. 63 Courtney Colton were eliminated in main draw completion Thursday, but continued gaining invaluable experience facing some of the country’s most talented tennis players in the back draw.
Colton lost in the first round of action after falling yesterday to the No. 1 seed and defending champion. The consolation round loss came from Michigan’s Ronit Yurovsky who played teammate Campbell in All-American consolation rounds earlier this fall. After an extremely close match the Wolverine’s came out on top, defeating Colton; 6-4, 6-7(5), 6-2.Campbell squared off against the No. 3 player in the country and No. 1 seed in consolation rounds. The 6-3, 6-4 win is huge for the sophomore who adds another win against a top-ranked opponent to her fall repertoire.
The Franklin, Tenn. native takes on fellow SEC athlete, Julia Jones out of Ole Miss. Jones defeated the Commodore’s Astra Sharma last week in Oxford, Miss. The match will begin at 9:00 a.m. ET at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.
