Vanderbilt sophomore Sydney Campbell advances to the main draw of the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
Campbell overpowered Columbia’s No. 85 Kanika Vaidya, 6-3, 6-1 in the third and final round of qualifiers this afternoon. The Franklin, Tenn. native has not dropped a single set, and has not allowed an opponent to win more than four games so far in tournament action.
“Sydney (Campbell) has played some great tennis”, said head coach Geoff Macdonald. She had a really good win today. This tournament has been a great week for us and I think everyone has had really good wins. It’s been a great growing experience for the fall.”
In the first round of main draw competition, Campbell squares off against the University of Miami’s Stephanie Wagner. Wagner, a junior, went 21-4 last season for the Hurricanes and is currently ranked No. 18 by the ITA.
Courtney Colton was defeated in third round qualifiers by SEC opponent Brooke Austin of Florida, 6-0, 6-1.
Vanderbilt’s Frances Altick was originally selected for the main draw, but due to an ailing injury will not be competing in tournament play.
“We pulled Frances (Altick) out of singles due to wrist tendonitis. We are airing on the side of caution. It’s a disappointment, but that’s what we decided we needed to do.”
Main draw singles play is slated to begin at 10 a.m. tomorrow morning, with all matches being played at the Riviera Tennis Club.
